Thermal biology of newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) chronically infected with a naturally occurring pathogen

چکیده

1. Newts chronically infected with an Ichthyophonus-like organism selected warmer temperatures than healthy newts, consistent with prior work on behavioral fever, though the magnitude of the difference was much greater than reported in other studies. 2. The large difference in selected temperature (411 1C) may be a consequence of the chronic nature of the Ichthyophonus infection in newts from the field. 3. Healthy newts exhibited a higher thermal tolerance than infected newts, reflecting the greater morbidity of infected newts. 4. Little is known about the course of Ichthyophonus in newts, and the possible consequences of changes in thermal biology are discussed. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Temperature preference during forelimb regeneration in the red-spotted newt Notophthalmus viridescens.

Red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) are model organisms for regenerative research. These animals can regenerate limbs, tails, jaws, spinal cords, as well as the lens of the eye. Newts are small ectotherms that are aquatic as adults; as ectotherms, they naturally conform to the temperature of their surroundings. Environmental temperatures, however, can increase or decrease the red-spot...

Field evidence for leech-borne transmission of amphibian Ichthyophonus sp.

Parasites have been implicated in mass mortality events and population declines of amphibians around the world. One pathogen associated with mortality events in North America is an Ichthyophonus sp.-like organism that affects red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) and several frog species, yet little is known about the distribution of this pathogen in wild populations or the mechanism of...

Chemical Defense of the Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens): Variation in Efficiency against Different Consumers and in Different Habitats

Amphibian secondary metabolites are well known chemically, but their ecological functions are poorly understood--even for well-studied species. For example, the eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) is a well known secretor of tetrodotoxin (TTX), with this compound hypothesized to facilitate this salamander's coexistence with a variety of aquatic consumers across the eastern United States. H...

Laboratory studies of homing orientation in the eastern red-spotted newt, Notophthalmus viridescens.

The orientation behaviour of adult male eastern red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) was studied in laboratory tests. Newts were collected from ponds located 10-30 km from the laboratory, and housed in water-filled, all-glass aquaria located in a greenhouse or outdoors adjacent to the laboratory building. The aquaria were aligned on the magnetic north-south axis. Newts were tested in a...

Disease dynamics of red-spotted newts and their anuran prey in a montane pond community.

Long-term monitoring of amphibians is needed to clarify population-level effects of ranaviruses (Rv) and the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). We investigated disease dynamics of co-occurring amphibian species and potential demographic consequences of Rv and Bd infections at a montane site in the Southern Appalachians, Georgia, USA. Our 3-yr study was unique in combining dise...
